Do I need any experience to attend classes at The Shoe College?
No, The Shoe College offers classes at all skill levels. Simply choose a class that fits your particular skill level. However, you are encouraged to discuss which class might best suit your needs, goals, level of skill, BEFORE enrollment, therefore, The Shoe College is not responsible for students' unreasonable expectations.

Should I expect to make a perfect sample of my dream shoe at The Shoe College?
No. Your shoe project will reflect your own abilities, and be dependent on your skillsets and prior experience in shoe making. Although many other activities share similar skillsets, and may translate well, you should not expect to come away with a perfect sample, or one that even fits prefectly even under the best circumstances, because your attendence at The Shoe College is a LEARNING experience, not one in which every skill and procedure can be mastered in the relatively short duration of the class or coursework, even with the assistance of your qualified instructor. Like everything else, mastery requires an investment of much time and practice. Students learn tools, materials, equipment and procedures but it is unreasonable to expect to master anything in the class itself. Practice, practice, practice!

Where are the classes held?
Classes are held in the Wilma Accessories Ltd. Shoe Lab on the campus of the Old Mingus Art Center in Jerome, AZ.

How often are classes offered?
Some classes are offered every month, while others only several times a year. Check the Class Offerings Page for current classes and schedules.

What if I need more information about a class listed on the site?
Please send us an email from the email tab or the contactus page. We're always glad to promptly answer any questions you may have.

I have made some shoes but I need to fill in some gaps that i didn't learn elsewhere. Can you help me?
Yes. If you already have a basis of experience and yet know that there are some techniques or procedures you are missing, let us know. We can work out a curriculum based on your individual needs and help you to round out your skill set. Tamera works with you to get you the skills & experience necessary for you to take it to the next level on your own with confidence, inspiration and practical knowledge. The day rate for one on one training at the shoe lab is $250/day with a 2 day minimum. Scheduled by mutual agreement.

Is The Shoe College accredited?
No, The Shoe College is a non accredited, private teaching/mentoring program and is a subsidiary of Wilma Accessories Limited.

Who attends The Shoe College?
Designers and sales teams in large corporate companies like Abercrombie, independent designers, custom shoe makers, and hobbyists alike.

What does The Shoe College specialize in?
Hands on fabrication and construction and design of all kinds of quality footwear.

Does The Shoe College teach CAD or Auto CAD?
No, The Shoe College specializes in the hands on actual fabrication of shoes and prototypes. We do not teach CAD because students can learn CAD anywhere, whereas actual fabrication and hand-made techniques of construction of quality footwear is not available anywhere else in North America. We emphasize quality hand construction and european methods of fabrication and design which makes sense of CAD, since CAD does not give it's user any useful information about the materials and constructions of the item drafted. The Shoe College helps because students learn how various materials actually behave, giving the designer greater information that can then be used in conjunction w/ CAD allowing for better design and more informed choices in regards to materials and methods of construction. Students learn how to make their own prototypes (in the special coursework and certificate programs)

Can I make my own design of shoe in a regularly scheduled class?
The regularly scheduled classes do not allow for the student to design their own shoes. These classes are intended to teach students the fundamentals of fabrication/construction of a quality hand made shoe (w/o the use of components like some other, more expensive shoe making workshops and classes out there) If students wish to design their own shoe, they must enroll in special course work or the certificate program.

What do I get with the certificate program?
Students work with the instructor in a mentoring environment to create a program that meets each student's specific needs, whether it is gearing them for a corporate design job or to become an indepent designer. Students are required to design and make at least 3 pairs of shoes within the course of their program. Upon successful completion, students receive a certificate of completion and a letter of recommendation from the director of The Shoe College. The Shoe College is a mentoring type of school, is not accredited and therefore does not offer college credit. Certificate students are also invited back for additional learning opportunities through our podcast program where they can gain additional knowledge and experience through assisting in the recording of podcasted shoe making courses in the shoe lab.

Does The Shoe College offer financial assistance?
No. However, we do accept Mastercard, Visa, PayPal and checks for your convenience.

What is "Special Course Work" and how can I use it to help me meet my goals/objectives?
Email us to discuss your particular goals and objectives, whatever they may be and we will help you design a special course work program to meet those needs or let you know if we cannot help you. The day rate for special course work is $375/day.
